Mix Speaker’s,Inc. 10th Anniversary Interview

VG:First of all please introduce yourself and let us know a Japanese food you would recommend to people overseas.

S: I am drummer S. If you are going to visit Japan, I would recommend umeboshi(pickled Japanese plum). If possible please try home-made umeboshi instead of ones sold in supermarkets. You will find it surprising that the Japanese eat such a sour food.

MIKI: I am vocalist MIKI. I recommend soba (buckwheat noodle). I know there are many ramen and soba restaurant in other countries, but I would really want people to eat the soba made in Japan and savor the difference.

seek: I am bassist seek. I am gonna recommend a set of Japanese sake, sashimi, and wasabi. Of course there are many savory fishes cuisine around the world but I think there are only a few countries that eat fish raw. Plus, the Japanese distinct spice, wasabi just makes sashimi delicious. Japanese sake is made from Japanese rice and I would really like people to try it.

NIKA: I am vocalist NIKA. I would recommend miso soup. There are a variety of types of miso soup, and the taste varies from home to home. So, I can’t say what would be the best but when you visit Japan, please take an opportunity to try miso soup at different restaurants and try to find the one best for you. I think you will enjoy the different tastes because the filling and broth varies.

VG:So it is the bands 10th anniversary and, the band has had many themes over the decade. Can you share with us what was the most impressive thing you have experienced over the 10 years?

NIKA: For me, it would be my very first live that took place in Shinjuku BLAZE. I remember clearly that I was very nervous. The band relatively has a long history, and I do understand that there are many ways people see us and there are those who compare to the past. I think a vocalist is the face of a band and when something that has been approved by the fans suddenly turn into something new, I was afraid listeners would not approve.

S: This is in means of answering towards overseas fans. It would be the very first Europe tour in 2009. We went to Finland, France, and Germany, not as a part of the Anime festival, but as a single band tour. It was a tour for fans who wanted to see us, and I remember I was very happy when I saw many fans come to see us. I was very surprised to see many people knew us in Finland and Germany. Just full of memories, and I still remember the places and staffs that were involved.

MIKI: For me, the first Shibuya Koukaidou we performed around the end of our first year. It was my first time to set foot on Shibuya Koukaidou for an one-man live and at that time I was just very nervous. Usually when we are at a venue, we can get the feeling that there are people outside waiting for us, but at Shibuya Koukaidou, that wasn’t the case. I was so worried that people wouldn’t come, but as the live started, I was thrilled to see so many people came to see us. Unlike S, I don’t remember anything. I just wonder what I listened and sang, I think that is how much I was nervous at the live.

seek: The band was officially formed on Feb 19th 2007, but from around Dec of 2006, as a warm up, we appeared in an event as a secret guest without revealing our band name. The venue was literally with only a few people and it was in a situation where people would not recognize us but as we appeared on stage, people sitting down stood up and came to the front for us. Also we had a venue limited CD which people purchased that day. It was when we were at the time the band was getting ready, and I think this was the day when the things we had in are mind became realized. So, I have strong impression of that day that made us feel that what we were about to do is not wrong and believe this is our path.

VG: Thank you. Next, can you share with us your favorite costume from your past themes? It does not have to be your own costume.

NIKA: I would like to wear, seek’s castle costume.

seek: That costume was heavy and my face does not appear in the artist photos for this costume. As a result, most of the castle costume was composed later for artist photos. It was like I should have taken a photo by myself.

All: [laugh]

seek: I don’t know why I went through all that trouble at the photo shoot. [laugh]

MIKI: I like keiji’s Water Ogre from the 2nd costume of the first monster series. Might not be what I should say, but I thought at that time, how keiji had become very attractive. [laugh] He looked very smart in this costume. It’s not that I want to wear it but I just thought it was a good costume.

S: I would say my first costume. I don’t know if it would be a costume since I’m wearing a big round moon and as that moon is split in two, I appear attiring a costume. With the moon, I didn’t know what to create it with so, I bought a large sphere styrofoam, and with paper clay I made the crater surface of the moon, painted it as I consulted with our stylist. It was such a work, that I thought to myself, “ what am I doing? “

All: [laugh]

MIKI: Sort of like winter holiday homework. [laugh]

S: Yup, exactly. It had that DIY touch, and I remember I was struggling a lot with it. Now we have what we accomplished as our base so, when we say what we want to create, at least we can imagine what the finished costume would turn out to be. But at that time, it was the first costume from scratch involving opinions from people around that I feel was very homemade in a good way.

seek: This may sort of turn away from the character and all, but when we started this band, we wanted all the members to be able to be recognized just by the silhouettes. With me, I was the tall character so, I have been wearing custom height shoes for the 10 years. Speaking of handmade, the shoes are not handmade like S. Just for reference, their custom order.

All: [laugh]

seek: It surprises me that when they are order made, they can last 10 years. These shoes have many memories in them.

VG: Over the decade, the band has had many releases and played at live performances. Can you each tell us what would be your favorite song?

seek: I would choose a recent song, “Forbidden Forest”. It is a vocal and piano song, but it is a song we would like to do in a long span. I don’t think we would have been able to create this song in our first year. During this 10th anniversary tour we have been doing a band arrange version so, I have many fond memories toward this song.

S: “Crash Clover”. I think this song is the most heavy song of Mix Speaker’s Inc.. I get emotional when I see fans having fun during heavy songs. I always hold my tears but when I see fans head bang and jump to the music, I feel thankful for being able to do a band. This song has so many emotional moments for me.

MIKI: I chose “little star”. The lyric for the main melody is in English and I really thought about it. I did not make it a direct translation, instead, I heard that it also has a meaning “twinkling night star” so, I used this English. This song is memorable one since the way I wrote the lyric was not my usual style. Also the choreography and the lyric match, and the song also stands out well at lives.

NIKA: “White feel”. This song was made before I joined the band. I was surprised on how melancholic and tender the song was.

MIKI: [laugh]

NIKA: MIKI wrote the lyrics, and this song is about the feelings of Teru teru bozu (a doll made of white paper or cloth. A Japanese custom that people believed if you hang this doll at the eaves, it will bring good weather for the next day.) When I read the lyrics I felt MIKI seemed a good guy. Although it is our bands song, in objective terms, I just simply adore this song.

VG: All of you have been together for quite a while, and know each other very well. Please come up with an animal that makes you think of the member on your left and share us your reason.

seek: Donkey. ( Answers right away regarding S)

All: [laugh]

seek: When he is eating something he looks like a donkey and eats like one.

S: (About MIKI) Hmm, what would he be. In a positive term, a cat. Whimsical like a cat. It is like when something was OK before, becomes a NO suddenly. I think that part of him is his charm and what attracts people.

MIKI: In negative terms?

S: Tanuki (Raccoon dog.).

All: [laugh]

MIKI: (About NIKA) A scared dog. A dog that barks but is scared at the same time and flees away when called upon.

NIKA: (About seek) I think seek is the most difficult to think of. Ware wolf?

MIKI: He’s not that swift.

seek: Not an agile type.

MIKI: In terms of slow, a sloth. But mental-wise, I would say an owl?

NIKA: Ah~ an owl.

S: Alligator snapping turtle.

MIKI: That’s a good one!

S: This turtle bites until it rips off the flesh of the prey. It waits in the water with its mouth open.

MIKI: It has some pheromone in its mouth that lures fishes.

S: And then when the fish enters the mouth the turtle shuts its mouth and eat the fish.

MIKI: A trapper.

S: Seems very fast in the waters.

NIKA: Yes!

VG: Then Alligator snapping turtle it is! How about AYA and keiji?

MIKI: keiji would be a hyena.

S: Nice one. He would be a hyena since he points out mistakes in conversations pretty fast.

VG: How about AYA.

seek: I think it would be a monkey. I think monkey would be the most animal like and moves by instinct.

NIKA: Yes. I think he is the one that moves by instinct.

seek: In a good way an angel with wing. A boy, ah… no, a baby.

MIKI: Around 5 years old? [laugh]

seek: AYA is like a herbivorous animal.

S: A goat? Both in positive and negative terms, rough.

seek: A goat forgets what it ate when it turns another direction. When its facial angle changes, the whole world changes for him. A boar is just like that.

All: Definitely, a boar.

VG: Since your opinions are unanimous with the previous question, lastly, please share with us about your spirits toward the 10th anniversary live.

seek: So it is our 10th anniversary and it is something that we have not experienced before. There were times where things didn’t go the way we wanted to, and there were things that may been improved as well. But, relatively we were in an environment where we were able to decide what we wanted to do so I believe we were able to present a decade of purely rich quality. Since this live will be something that will sum up the 10 years, we would like to present a live that is high in quality, and have as many people as possible come and see us.

S: The 10 year anniversary will be the fruits of the 10 years of our activities. I would say it would be a perfect 100% if I am able to do my part as usual. But I may probably become emotional when the live starts, and this day I really don’t know how the outcome will be. Though, I’m aiming to be my usual self at this live. Please come and see us!

MIKI: In the 10 years, there were many concepts, many songs, and many lives. I think that is our 10 years of human drama. It is the evolution of us, and I think you will get a glimpse of the human drama from the first to tenth year. So this live is not what we will be going to do but, moreover a live that show the human drama of us.

NIKA: For me, it may not be the 10 years, and for those who are fans of Mix Speaker’s Inc. before I joined the band may feel a bit awkward, but I believe, the past and present all adds up to the 10 years of this band. It is the truth that I am also a part of the 10 years that created Mix Speaker’s Inc. so I hope everyone can enjoy reminiscing the 10 years at the live. Also, I hope this live will be something that will have everyone want to see more of Mix Speaker’s Inc. in the future. Like what S had said, I believe that enjoying the live as always is the link to the future and I would also want to enjoy this live.

VG: Thank you very much!

MIKI: 俺は「little star」です。

MIKI: (NIKA

NIKA: (seek

MIKI: keiji
