Mix Speaker’s,Inc. New Album “Saigo no Bansan” Interview

VG：Vkei-Guide is a web magazine that guides Japan through Visual-kei to overseas. First of all, can you each give us your name, part in the band and a place in Japan you recommend to overseas viewers?

NIKA: Hi, I am the vocalist NIKA. I am from Sendai, Miyagi prefecture. There is a place called Ryu-hou-den where Masamune Date, a historical figure is enshrined. I recommend this place because it is such a beautiful place. Also, there are many temples and shrines all over Japan, such as Asakusa temple in Asakusa, and Kinkaku temple in Kyoto. Those are good places as well. Moreover, temples and shrines that have colorful architectures are also eye-catchingly beautiful even to us Japanese, so I recommend that too.

MIKI: I am vocalist MIKI. I recommend. Skytree in Tokyo. You will get the idea when you climb up to the sight-seeing platform and gaze the Tokyo scenery

S: I am drummer S. I am from Himeji, Hyogo prefecture, so I would recommend the Himeji Castle which is a world cultural heritage. You will get the idea of what “the Japanese” castle is like from the Himeji Castle.

seek: I am bassist seek. We often have a chance to go overseas, and I think tourist spots are good, but I would recommend the good old Japanese towns. It may need a bit of courage to go into those towns, but once you discover, you will find affordable and savory foods. For example, Keisei-tateishi in Tokyo, you can find places to have a drink in daytime and eat affordable savory foods. On the holidays, those places open from before noon and close around early evening but that is the good part of those good old Japanese towns.

VG: So Mix Speaker’s Inc. always has a concept in each story. In the recent Mix Theater, the “Zestsubou restaurant” is the concept. Can each of you explain to us your role in the concept?

NIKA: My role is the last main dish of the full-course menu.

MIKI: The spooky hors d’oeuvre. My role is the first dish that you don’t want to put up with.

seek: AYA is the tragic salad. But, salad is just only by name, very junky, high calorie, and more like preferring quantity to quality. keiji is the impure drink. There are 2 glasses, one is tequila and the other is a poison. It is up to you to choose and from what you have chosen the full-course changes. I am the screaming soup. The soup is mixed with the screams from all over the world and the chef takes a sip everyday so his throat is given damages.

S: I am the hideous desert. You won’t know if the taste is good or not until you eat it.

NIKA: Yes, sometime it turns out good. [laugh]

S: Yup. It is like an escort to the time with your love, but the one escorting with seethe.

VG: The costume in this concept looks comfortable compared to the other costumes.

S: Yes. It is better. For me it is like, around 7~8 years since I have worn a costume that fits my body and face is revealed. So, I feel really released from those big costumes I usually wore. Drumming feels confortable too.

VG: So, next. The recent release “Saigo no bansan” has 2 new songs and 4 re-takes. What made you to choose the 4 songs from the various songs that have been born through the decade.

seek: We had a very difficult time choosing the 4 songs but NIKA said he also treasures the songs that had been there before he joined the band 2 years ago. I think many fans listen to our CDs before they come to our lives so we chose songs that fans can enjoy at lives.

VG: Please chose one song from “Saigo no bansan“and introduce us the song.

NIKA: I felt the first song “Saigo no bansan”, did not seem like a song that you would put in a single but, we intentionally chose this song so we can present a whole new atmosphere in our concepts.

So, it is pretty much performed in lives where we have changes in the atmosphere, or sometimes as the first or last song of a live. In the concept “Zesubou restaurant” of Mix Theater, this song is the main song in the latter half of the concept and by having the comparison with the main song of the first half, it is a good weapon to present a whole new atmosphere.

MIKI: “☆彡Station” is a re-take, and the key of the vocal has changed. The part I sing changed as well, so, it’s a new song. [laugh]

S: The new song, “JUNKY BAD HEELS” is just perfect for lives and at this point, it has already evolved into a song where we have the call and response with the fans. It is a fun song. I would like fans to listen to this song and join us at our live.

seek: The last song “If” was made in the early stage, around a year after the band was created. We tend to play this song around special occasions, so to us it is a very special song. We included this song because we wanted the fans to listen to the song once again in this 10^th anniversary year. “MONSTIME”, I think is the most played song at our lives, and a song that we get tired of when we do rehearsals. [laugh] So, most of the time, we skip the rehearsal for this song. I think the instrument team can play without looking at the fret. At lives, sometimes NIKA plays the drum, and MIKI plays the bass. Basically the song is still evolving.

MIKI: Yeah, it is a song we don’t want to be serious in rehearsals. [laugh] It is the song where we just relax. No more rehearsals for this song.

seek: It’s a song that just penetrated in our body.

NIKA: We had a hard time picking the ballad but by looking at the balance of the album we chose “Kasa no shita no sekai”. It is a song that really sharpens up the atmosphere when we play at lives. Different from the “Saigo no bansan”, I think you can appreciate a totally different atmosphere of the song.

VG: Thank you. Lastly, what would you like to eat on you last supper?

seek: Liver sashimi. In Japan it is prohibited now but I don’t think it would be any deal to eat liver sashimi so I’d go for it before I die.

S: I would like to eat mochi(rice cake) that is made by rice mortar. If I were to die, I would die savoring the taste of the rice cake without any flavoring. I just love rice cake to the point it became my number one food. Ever New Year, relatives sends us handmade rice cakes to my home and I always look forward to them.

MIKI: I like spicy food like hot pepper. The spiciness I like is hot pepper type so, I can go for super spicy if it is hot pepper type.

NIKA: I like Japanese rice. Would be best if it was with a side dish but, most of all rice is the best.

VG: Lastly, can each of you give us a message to the fans overseas.

S: I think more the overseas people know about us, the more we can do lives overseas. So, I hope overseas people can take this opportunity to know about us, and it would be great if we can perform at everyone’s countries one day. Please support us. If anyone has a chance to come visit Japan, come stop by our lives as well. Thank you in advance.

MIKI: With this opportunity, it would be nice to have a relation where we can visit each other’s country.

NIKA: Nowadays Visual-kei bands are also formed overseas, and I think Japanese culture is much spread throughout the world. I think compared to the past, countries seems to have closer relationship. However, still, there are many people that do not know Visual kei. I would really like overseas people to spread the visual and the music of Mix Speaker’s Inc. Of course we will take efforts to present ourselves, and if you feel that our songs are good as Visual kei, I would like people to recommend us to their friends.

seek: There are many Visual kei bands around, and I believe Mix Speaker’s Inc. is a band that can be enjoyed with the 5senses. Our band is a twin vocal band and is rare among Visual kei. Each of us has unique and different costumes so please check us out!

VG: Vkei-Guideはヴィジュアル系を通して海外に日本をガイドするというコンセプトのウェブマガジンです。まずはお名前とパートと外国人にお勧めしたいスポットを教えてください。

NIKA: ヴォーカルのNIKAです。僕は宮城県仙台市出身で、伊達政宗を祭っている瑞鳳殿というところがあるんですが、そこがとても綺麗でお勧めです。他にもお寺とか神社とか日本全国にたくさんあるので、浅草の浅草寺とか京都の金閣寺とかもいいと思います。色がとても鮮やかなお寺や神社は、僕ら日本人が見ても綺麗だと思うのでお勧めしたいです。

MIKI: ヴォーカルのMIKIです。東京のスカイツリーです。とりあえず展望台から東京を見ていただければと思います。

S: ドラムのSです。僕は兵庫県姫路市出身なので、世界文化遺産でもある姫路城がお勧めです。ザ・日本のお城という感じなのでぜひ見ていただきたいです。

seek: ベースのseekです。僕らも海外に行くこともあるんですが、観光地とかもいいと思いますが、日本の下町がいいと思います。外国で下町に行くというのは少し勇気がいりますが、そういうところに踏み込んでいただけると、より安くて美味しいものが食べられると思います。例えば、東京の京成立石とかは、お昼からお酒を飲むようなところで安い食べ物もあります。祝日とかはお昼前からお店が始まって、夕方にはお店が閉まるくらいなんですが、そういうところがいいと思います。

VG: 常にストーリーの中にコンセプトがあるMix Speaker’,Inc.ですが、現在はMix Theaterで「絶望レストラン」をコンセプトにされていますが、今回のそれぞれの担当を教えてください。

NIKA: 僕はフルコースの中の最後のメインディッシュという役割です。

MIKI: 不気味オードブルです。最初のとっつきづらいところを担当しています。

seek:　AYAくんが悲劇サラダです。サラダとは名ばかりの超ジャンクフードで高カロリーで、質より量です。keijiくんが不純ドリンク。テーブルにグラスが2つ並んでいて、片方がテキーラで片方が毒らしく、どちらを選ぶかはあなた次第。それでフルコースが左右されます。そして自分は悲鳴スープです。世界中の悲鳴が混ぜ込まれていて、シェフは毎日このスープを味見しているので喉が潰れてしまっています。

S: 僕が醜いデザートです。美味しいか美味しくないかは食べてみないとわからないという感じです。

NIKA: 美味しい時もある、みたいな。（笑）

S: そうですね。恋人との時間をエスコートしますっていう感じなんですけど、腸は煮えくり返ってるという感じです。

VG: 今回の衣装は動きやすそうですね。

S: 非常に動きやすいです。僕が大きい衣装ではなく、自分の体型のままで顔が出ている衣装は約7、8年ぶりです。なのですごく解き放たれた感じです。ドラムも息ができて快適に叩けます。

VG: では、最新アルバム「最後の晩餐」は2曲が新曲で4曲がリテイクということですが、10年間でたくさんの曲がある中、この4曲が選ばれた理由を教えてください。

seek: 選曲は非常に難航しましたが、NIKAくんが2年前に加入してから過去の曲もやはり大切にしたいと思っていて、やはりファンの方はCDを聴いてからライブに来る方が多いと思うので、盛り上がりとかライブを中心に考えて、聴いていただきたい曲を中心に集めました。

VG: 「最後の晩餐」から一曲ずつ曲紹介をお願いします。

NIKA: 1曲目の「最後の晩餐」ですが、これまでのMix Speaker’s,Inc.としてはシングルっぽくない楽曲なんだろうなと思いましたが、そういうところをあえて選んで、今までとガラッと変わった雰囲気を見せられるように選ばれました。まさにライブでもガラッと雰囲気を変えるところに使われたり、1曲目に使われたり、最後の曲に使われたりもしています。Mix Theaterの中の「絶望レストラン」というコンセプトの中では後編の主題歌となっていて、前編の時の曲と対比を出して、また違う世界を広げて、それをうまく提示するためのいい武器です。

MIKI: 「☆彡Station」はリテイクの曲ですが、ヴォーカルのキーが変わっています。歌うパートも変わったので、新曲です。（笑）

S: 新曲の「JUNKY BAD HEELS」は、すごくライブ向きで、新曲なのにすでにアレンジされていて、お客さんとコール＆レスポンスするような感じに進化していて、みんながノリノリになれる1曲です。これを聴いて一緒にライブで盛り上がって欲しいです。

seek:　最後の「If」ですが、バンドを結成して1年目という早い段階からあった曲ですが、バンドの節目節目に演奏することが多かったので、みんなの思い入れが強くて、この10周年のタイミングでファンの皆さんにもう一度聴いて欲しくて入れたのでぜひ聴いてください。「MONSTME」はライブで一番やってきて、僕らがリハーサルで飽きている曲です。（笑）なのでリハーサルでは割愛されることも多いです。楽器隊はフレットを見なくても弾けるんじゃないかと思いますね。ライブではドラムをNIKAくんが叩いたり、MIKIくんがベース弾いたりしながら進化していっている曲です。

MIKI: リハーサルで真剣にやりたくない曲です。（笑）肩の力を抜くところですね。もう大丈夫っす、っていう感じです。

seek:　一番体に染み込んでいる曲ですね。

NIKA: 歌ものっていうところで、選曲に悩みましたが、アルバムのトータルのバランスで考えて、「傘の下の世界」が選ばれました。ライブでやるとすごく空気が締まる感じがする曲です。「最後の晩餐」とはまた別で、違った世界に浸ってもらえるかなと思います。

VG: ありがとうございます。それでは、みなさんが最後の晩餐に食べたいものは何でしょうか。

seek: レバ刺しです。今は日本では食べられないものなので、どうせ死ぬならレバ刺し食べてどうなろうが関係ないので、これを食べて死にたいと思います。

S: 僕は杵と臼でついたつきたてのお餅です。味付けとして何もつけずにお餅本来の味を楽しみながら死んでいきたいです。お餅が一番好きかもしれないなというくらい好きなんです。毎年年始は、親戚がついたお餅を実家に送ってくれるので、それを食べるのがいつも楽しみです。

MIKI: 俺は唐辛子系の辛いもの全般です。好きな辛さは唐辛子のみで、唐辛子のみの激辛なら全然余裕でいけますね。

NIKA: 僕は日本のお米です。おかずもあったら最高ですが、何よりもお米です。

VG: では最後に海外のみなさんにメッセージをお願いします。

S: 海外のみなさんに僕たちのことを知ってもらえばもらうほど僕たちも海外でライブとか活動することができるので、これを機にいっぱい知っていただいて、みなさんの国にライブをしに行けたら幸せだなと思うので、ぜひとも応援していただければと思います。もし日本に遊びに来ることがあれば、旅行ついでに僕たちのライブを観ていただきたいです。ぜひこれからもよろしくお願いします。

MIKI: これを機にお互いがお互いの国を行き来できるような関係になれたらいいですね。がんばります。

NIKA: 今ではヴィジュアル系は海外でもバンドが組まれていて、日本の文化が海外に出ているという部分もあるので、昔に比べたら海外でも近い存在だと思いますが、それでもまだ知らない方も多いと思います。1人でも多くの人にヴィジュアル系として僕らの見た目と音楽を広めていきたいと思っているので、努力しますし、もし僕らの音楽をヴィジュアル系としていいなと思ってくれるのなら、ぜひ友達にも勧めて欲しいと思います。

seek: たくさんのヴィジュアル系バンドがいますが、その中でもMix Speaker’s,Inc.は五感を使って楽しんでもらえるようなバンドだと思います。メンバーもツインヴォーカルというヴィジュアル系の中では変わった形態でやっていますし、各々のキャラクターも違っていて、とても個性的なバンドなので、ぜひとも五感を使って楽しんでいただきたいと思います。
