VG: Vkei-Guide is a web magazine that guides people living overseas around Japan through Visual-kei. First of all, please tell us a Japanese food you would recommend to people overseas.

Soan: I recommend “miso (bean paste).” “Miso soup” warms your heart.

Temari: I would say “sushi.”

Akuta: I would recommend “nabe (hot pot cooking).” “Nabe” means a meal in which various ingredients are cooked in a large pot and eaten with others. When we eat it with someone together, it promotes bonding.

VG: Now it is the middle of summer, please tell us something that reminds you of the “Japanese summer?”

Soan: “Matsuri (Japanese summer festivals).” I think people wearing a “yukata (summer kimono)” are unique to Japanese culture, so please go out to a matsuri wearing a yukata when you come to Japan in summer.

Temari: Attractive culture and customs (i.e., windchimes) that make us feel coolness in hotness.

Akuta: A broken heart for me. It makes me think of my broken heart when I was a third-year high school student.

VG: 1 year has passed since the project started. What kind of people are the two other members to you?

Soan: Both Akuta and Temari are precious to me because they understand the feelings that I want to share, deeply and densely, and can deliver them to the fans. Also, they are like my dear younger brothers who each have beliefs and express them with their full effort together.

Temari: Soan-san is an artist I respect, my senior, a leader, a big brother, and my employer, again. Akuta-kun might be me…

Akuta: Soan-san is my eternal big brother. Temari-kun is sometimes like a doctor who examines me comprehensively.

VG: When the two other members are compared to colors, which color suits them? Please give us the reasons as well.

Soan: Deep blue for Temari. It’s deep, like a deep ocean. And orange for Akuta. I have an image of a color that changes along with heat, such as the sunset and the morning sun, according to the situation.

Temari: Vivid red for Soan, and misty blue for Akuta.

Akuta: Purple for Soan-san, warm red mixed with cool blue. Black red for Temari-kun, like a sense lighting a candle in the middle of the night.

VG: For the new releases “Senritsu, Shizuka na Negai to (旋律、静かな願いと)” and “Chouritsu, sono Myakudou ni Tou (調律、その脈動に問う),” it is a rare case that both the projects (with Temari and with Akuta) release mini albums two times in a row. Please share what made you decide on that.

Soan: The releases are counterparts, so I wanted to put the same deepness with the same amount of heat into them. However, I wanted to express different stories and different world views, so I chose albums exceeding the framework of a single. The voices of the fans who have been waiting for our songs are also one of the big reasons.

VG: In terms of costumes this time, they were inspired by birds in the artist photo, and it seems that black represents heaviness in music as a band and white represents gentleness in music ,like classical music. Were the costumes thought up by Soan?

Soan: I expressed the worlds of “tranquility” and “emotion,” that I wanted to describe, with these costumes. Human beings are alive always having a “pair.” That part and my sound have been linked in the artist photo.

VG: Both the albums contain “sign…” This is a very unique idea because you have two projects. It seems that Akuta’s lyrics are from a female perspective; in contrast, Temari’s lyrics are from a male perspective. Are you aware of each other’s lyrics? Please tell us the background of these songs.

Soan: Originally, I composed this song for the project with Akuta. As the images in the lyrics Akuta wrote were so nice, I thought if Temari wrote lyrics for the same music, an interesting chemical reaction might occur, moreover, it would be a good challenge because of these two projects. I asked Temari about it, and we made it happen. I don’t think I could try this approach without these vocalists I respect, Akuta and Temari.

Temari: In Soan’s definition of Soan Project, I think this is one of the “possibilities,” as a form of expression created by our minds that we enjoy producing and trying flexibly. It only happened because I respect Soan-san as a composer and Akuta-kun as a lyric writer and vocalist. Otherwise, I could not write the lyrics even if someone asked me to. To that extent, I think it is meaningful and valuable.

Akuta: First, the music for “with Akuta” was composed, and I wrote the lyrics for the music, and after that, Soan-san came up with this idea. The reason why I answered “Temari-kun is like a doctor” for the question above is he made “sign…” deeper for “with Temari.”

VG: Now, please recommend a song from your new mini albums, respectively.

Soan: I recommend “Sore wo Boku ha Fuhen to Yobi, Kimi ha Sore wo Fuhen to Yonda (それを僕は普遍と呼び、君はそれを不変と詠んだ)” from “with Temari,” and “Setsuna wo Kekeru Inochi no Ichigyou ni (刹那を駆ける命の一行に)” from “with Akuta.” In both the songs, I describe my gratitude, and the gratitude was well projected by Temari and Akuta. In addition, the songs got momentum through the lyrics which can deliver feelings not only to the members and the fans but also to listeners and readers. I want overseas fans to read and understand these songs.

Temari: “Soutaisuru Shitsuryou no Kousakusuru Netsuryou (相対する質量の交錯する熱量)” because of the dramatic development of the song, and “Shousou no Hibi no Tobari, Shousuisuru Shirayukihime (焦燥の日々の帷、憔悴する白雪姫)” because of the production of the piano melody and the lyrics.

Akuta: I would recommend “Setsuna ni kakeru Inochi no Ichigyou ni (刹那に駆ける命の一行に).” I think I found something like an answer as a singer.

VG: Conversely, please recommend a song other than your songs from the mini albums.

Temari: “Setsuna ni kakeru Inochi no Ichigyou ni (刹那に駆ける命の一行に)” because the deep feelings of the composer and the lyric writer which are included in the song are embodied in the sound.

Akuta: I would like to recommend “sign…resonance” above all. After I wrote from my heart, I had many things I was forced to realize thanks to doctor Temari’s operation.

VG: At last, please give a message to your fans overseas.

Soan: I really like “visual-kei,” which is a unique part of Japanese culture, and I approach the music with the feeling of “delivering it to your heart” in a Japanese way based on the concepts of “tranquility” and “emotion.” I sincerely hope that the sound of Soan Project can be delivered to as many people as possible via this unique website, “Vkei-Guide.” Of course, I want to go abroad with these projects some time, so I would be happy if you could support us.

Temari: As I am always aiming to write lyrics with the deepness of Japanese expression and its fascination, if you understand the meaning, you would like Soan Project and Japan more. I hope that our music will reach distant areas.

Akuta: I think you can enjoy the essence of Japanese visual-kei culture with Soan Project. I would be grateful if reading this interview gets you interested in Soan-san, Temari-kun, and our guest members, and our present and future activities.

VG：Vkei-Guideはヴィジュアル系を通して世界に日本をガイドするというコンセプトのウェブマガジンです。外国人にお勧めしたい日本の食べ物をそれぞれ教えてください。

Soan：『味噌』をオススメします。『味噌汁』など心も温まります。

手鞠：寿司。

芥：鍋ですね。鍋というのは沢山の具材をスープで煮て大勢で食べる食べ物です。一緒に食べると絆が深まります。

VG：現在、夏真っ盛りですが、「日本の夏」といって連想するものを教えてください。

Soan：『お祭り』です。浴衣姿は日本独特の文化だと思いますので、是非とも夏に日本にいらした際には浴衣姿でお祭りへと出かけてみてください。

手鞠：暑さの中に涼やかさを感じさせる風情ある文化や風習(風鈴とか)

芥：失恋です。高校3年生の時の僕の失恋を思いだします。

VG：プロジェクトのスタートから1年が経過しましたが、あなたにとって他の2人はどのような存在ですか。

Soan：芥・手鞠共に俺が伝えたい気持ちを深く・濃くファンへと届けてくれる大切な存在です。2人とも信念がある中で全力で一緒に表現してくれる大切な弟達です。

手鞠：Soanさん→尊敬するアーティスト、先輩、リーダー、兄貴、再雇用主。芥くん→僕かもしれない。

芥：Soanさんは永遠の兄貴。手鞠君は俯瞰的に僕を考察してくれるドクターのような存在に思うことがあります。

VG：他の2人を色に例えると何色がぴったりでしょうか。その理由も教えてください。

Soan：手鞠は藍色。深く、深海のような。芥はオレンジ。夕日や朝日など熱を持っているけれども状況によって様々に変化するイメージ。

手鞠：Soan→鮮やかな赤　芥→霞んだ青

芥：Soanさんは紫。寒色の青に暖かい赤が混ざっている存在。手鞠君は黒赤。真夜中にろうそくに火をともしているような感覚です。

VG：今回発売される「旋律、静かな願いと」と「調律、その脈動に問う」ですが、どちらのプロジェクトも2枚続けてミニアルバムをリリースするというのは珍しい形態ですが、そのように決まった経緯を教えてください。

Soan：対を成す存在なので同じ熱量で同じ深みを。そして違う物語を、違う世界観を表現したく、シングルという枠を超えてアルバムという形態にしました。多くの楽曲を心待ちにしてくれるファンの声も大きいです。

VG：今回の衣装ですが、アー写の鳥にも象徴されるように、黒は音楽的にもバンド的な激しい要素、白は音楽的にクラシカルで優しい要素が反映されているように思いますが、この衣装はSoanさんのイメージから作られましたか。

Soan：自身が描きたい「静」と「動」の世界をこのような形で表現しました。人間は「対」というものを常に持ち合わせながら生きている。そんな部分と自身の音をリンクさせているイメージです。

VG：両方に「sign…」という曲が入っていますね。2つのプロジェクトがあるからこその面白い試みだと思います。芥さんの詞は女性目線、手鞠さんの詞は男性目線のようですが、お互いの歌詞は意識しましたか。この曲ができた背景を教えてください。

Soan：元々with芥の方で『sign…』を書き上げましたが、芥が表現してくれた歌詞観が凄く素敵だったのもあって、同じ楽曲を手鞠が書いたら面白い化学反応が生まれるんじゃないか？更にはこのプロジェクトならではの試みが出来るのでは？そう思い、今回手鞠に相談し、こうして具現化できました。芥・手鞠という2人のリスペクトしているヴォーカリストでなければこういうアプローチはできなかったと思っています。

手鞠：Soanさんが提示するSoanプロジェクトという定義の中で、創作する事、挑戦する事を柔軟に楽しむ姿勢が産み出した表現としての「可能性」のひとつだと思います。

作曲者としてSoanさんを、作詞者、Voとして芥くんをリスペクトしているからこそ出来るもので、そうでなければ仮に誰かに頼まれたとしても僕には出来なかったと思います。

それくらい、意味と価値があると思っています。

芥：with芥の楽曲が先に出来て、自分が歌詞をつけさせていただいたんですが、そこからSoanさんがこのアイデアを思いつきました。Q3で手鞠君がドクターみたいだって思ったのはwith手鞠で『sign…』をさらに深いものにしてくれたからです。

VG：それぞれ自分のアルバムからお勧めの曲とお勧めポイントを教えてください。

Soan：『それを僕は普遍と呼び、君はそれを不変と詠んだ』(with手鞠)、『刹那を駆ける命の一行に』(with芥)です。どちらも俺自身の中にある「感謝の気持ち」というものを表現しているのですが、手鞠も芥もその感謝の気持ちを自分自身に投影したり、メンバーやファンだけでなく、読み手に対してしっかり伝わる歌詞を書いて楽曲がより熱を帯びたものになったからオススメです。海外の方にも是非とも読み取ってみて欲しいです。

手鞠：『相対する質量の交錯する熱量』→曲展開のドラマチックさ　『焦燥の日々の帷、憔悴する白雪姫』→ピアノの旋律と歌詞の演出

芥：『刹那に駆ける命の一行に』ですね。歌い手として一つ何か答えを見つけられた気がします。

VG：逆に相手の作品でお勧めしたい曲とそのお勧めポイントを教えてください。

手鞠：『刹那を駆ける命の一行に』曲に込められた作曲者と作詞者の深い思いが音に具現化されていること。

芥：やはりどうしても『sign…-resonance-』をおすすめしたくなります。自分の本質に触れることを書いて、それを更にドクター手鞠にオペされて気付かされたことが沢山あるので。

VG：最後に海外の皆さんにメッセージをお願いします。

Soan：日本独特のヴィジュアル系という文化が自分自身が凄く好きで、「静」と「動」というコンセプトを元に「心に伝える」という日本人ならではのアプローチをしています。Vkei-Guideという素晴らしいサイトを通じて、一人でも多くの人たちにSoanプロジェクトの音が届くことを心から願っています。そしていつか海外にも行けたらと思っているので応援してくれたら嬉しいです。

手鞠：日本のアーティストとして、日本語の表現の奥深さ、その魅力を意識した歌詞を心がけているので、もし意味を知ってもらえたら、一層Soanプロジェクトを、そして日本を好きになってもらえるかと思います。遠く離れた地でも僕らの音楽が届く事を願っています。

芥：Soanプロジェクトは日本のヴィジュアル系の文化の神髄を味わうことが出来るんじゃないかって思います。
