Tsukasa Mogamigawa “Golden☆Best Mogamigawa Tsukasa” Release E-mail Interview

VG: Vkei-Guide is a web magazine that introduces Japan through Visual-kei. What is the Japanese culture that you are proud of?

Tsukasa: Japanese etiquette. Something like, showing courtesy from start to end, sitting straight and greetings etc. I think it is an one-and-only Japanese culture, a way to interact in a respectful manner towards people.

VG: It has been 2 years since your major debut, and we assume you have experienced many things as an Enka singer. What is the most memorable experience you had over the past 2 years?

Tsukasa: My most memorable experience would be, the “Yamagata Cherry Festival” and, “Kahokuhokuhoku Festival” of my home town Kahoku-city which I have experienced during my Yamagata triumphal return live right after I made my debut. I still remember the cheers from the audience at the “Yamagata Cherry Festival” it was so amazing it still lingers in my ears. Even the “Kahokuhokuhoku Festival” when I had bronchitis and couldn’t sing well, I was supported by the audience and I felt happy and very thankful.

VG: Can you let us know the concept of your new costume?

Tuskasa: The costume attired in the CD jacket is the costume for the single “ Kimi no mune no nakani”, and since it is a song for my homeland, I designed it simple with a hint of traditional taste so I can reminisce my homeland.

VG: The recent release, “Golden☆Best Mogamigawa Tsukasa”, includes your original songs as well as cover songs of Enka veteran singers. What was your first thought when this talk of the release came up?

Tsukasa: I felt it was like something “festive”, because the record label had other simultaneous artist releases on that day. I am thankful to have people listen to my original songs, and this release is a significant opportunity to have people know I also do covers.

VG: How were the songs selected? Did you select them yourself?

Tsukasa: I selected the songs consulting with the people from the record label.

VG: Can you share with us the song you are most emotionally involved in this release?

Tsukasa: My debut song, “Matsupoiyo” and “Ima wa hana”. I’ve written the lyrics and music for both songs, and especially “Matsupoiyo” brings back the memories of when I first came to Tokyo. “Ima wa hana” is a song of all the good and bad things in my youth and this is the base of who I am now. This song recalls the feeling of “appreciation of the past”.

VG: We got the impression that you deeply value the words as you sing every song. Has the way you sing or feeling changed comparing before and after your debut?

Tsukasa: In my case, unlike other Enka singers, my debut was dramatic. This I mean,

I didn’t have any particular pre-preparation nor did I had a long training to be able to sing in front of the audience.

Though compared to now and then, I believe my feelings and the way I sing have changed in good terms. It is all thanks to everybody supporting me. Thank you very much.

VG: So, you write the lyrics and music for your songs, when do you make them?

Tsukasa: In living my daily life, I always record lyrics and melody on my cell phone when they come down in my mind. Sometimes, I sit at my desk and prepare myself to work on the songs!

VG: You covered “Michinoku hitoritabi” (original by Jyoji Yamamoto), have you ever traveled alone?

Tsukasa: No, but I would like to!! Like traveling worldwide.

VG: What made you start playing the Yokobue (cross brown flute). Also, do you have any other instrument you want to challenge?

Tsukasa: I remember that I had fun playing the Yokobue at a local festival when I was in Junior high. I would like to challenge the Shamisen.

VG: You have multi-talent and you also have talent in drawing pictures. Do you have any particular drawing you want to challenge?

Tsukasa: Oil painting on a large canvas.

VG: You have made your major debut, and actively participate in variation of media and events. What is your future goal as Mogamigawa Tsukasa?

Tsukasa: Participate in Kohaku Utagassen (an annual singing contest between male and female popular singers on New Year’s Eve) along with THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S which raised me.

VG: Lastly, could you give a message to the overseas fans?

Tsukasa: Enka and Visual-kei are totally different music genre but, both are music that Japan takes pride in. I would like to have overseas fans to see and listen to the new visual and music Mogamigawa Tsukasa creates. I would appreciate everyone’s support. Thank you.
